Who is responsible for your data?

Mag. Julia Čulen operates this website and is responsible for the personal data described below. You can write to her at Osterleitengasse 7, 1190 Wien, Austria, or email julia@juliaculen.com.

Hosting and website visits

Hetzner Online GmbH hosts the website in Germany. When you visit, the server processes information such as your IP address, the page requested, the time of the request and browser information. We use this information to deliver pages, troubleshoot errors and protect the site. Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in operating a reliable and secure website under Article 6(1)(f) GDPR. Hetzner privacy information

Web server logs are retained on a 30-day schedule. We keep recovery backups for up to seven days under our backup schedule. Google Drive stores the off-site backup copies. The legal basis for these backups is our legitimate interest in restoring the site and its data after a failure under Article 6(1)(f) GDPR.

Website analytics

If you choose to allow website analytics, we use Potoo to count visits and understand which articles people read and how readers find the site. It processes the pages and links visited, visit times, referring links and campaign information, and browser, language, device and approximate country information. It uses the IP address and browser information to create a temporary identifier for counting visits. If you are signed in, Ghost may also include your member identifier and membership status. We store analytics on our Hetzner server in Germany and retain the records on a 30-day schedule.

We collect this information with your consent under Article 6(1)(a) GDPR. We use a first-party cookie to remember your choice for up to 180 days. You can change your analytics preference at any time. Withdrawing consent stops future collection.

Email correspondence

EuroDNS provides the julia@juliaculen.com mailbox and the SMTP service used for individual website emails, such as signup and sign-in messages, through Open-Xchange. If you contact us, we use your email address, your message and any details you provide to respond and handle your request. We keep correspondence for as long as needed to resolve the matter and meet any applicable recordkeeping obligations. The legal basis for responding is our legitimate interest in handling correspondence under Article 6(1)(f) GDPR, or Article 6(1)(b) GDPR if your request concerns a contract or steps you ask us to take before entering one.

Newsletter and subscriptions

When you create a free account, you can choose whether to receive new posts by email. If you use the newsletter form, confirming your email adds the newsletter to your account. If you’re new here, confirmation also creates a free account. We use your email address, your name if you provide one, and your subscription and confirmation status to confirm and manage your subscription and to deliver new posts by email. We need your email address to deliver the newsletter. The legal basis for sending the newsletter is your consent under Article 6(1)(a) GDPR.

We use Mailgun (Mailgun Technologies, Inc., part of Sinch) as our newsletter delivery provider. It processes recipient email addresses, newsletter content and delivery information, such as delivery status and bounces. We use Mailgun’s EU region to process newsletter messages and delivery logs. Mailgun is a US company and replicates some account information globally. For transfers outside the European Economic Area, Sinch’s data processing agreement sets out safeguards, including the EU–US Data Privacy Framework and the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses where applicable. We have turned off newsletter open and link-click tracking. We still process delivery information, such as bounces, to deliver the newsletter and manage invalid addresses.

Some subscription records came from the previous WordPress site. We carry over the subscription status to honour your existing preferences. Paused and unsubscribed records are excluded from newsletter delivery.

You can withdraw your consent at any time using the unsubscribe link in a newsletter or by contacting us. Withdrawal applies to future processing. We keep the subscription record while you are subscribed. After you unsubscribe, we may retain the minimum information needed to honour your opt-out or document your consent for as long as necessary for those purposes. Our legal basis for this limited retention is our legitimate interest in respecting your preferences and documenting compliance under Article 6(1)(f) GDPR.

Stationista hosts the podcast artwork and audio. When your browser loads the artwork or streams an episode, it connects to Stationista and sends technical information such as your IP address, browser details and the file requested. Stationista provides podcast download and listening statistics based on media requests. The episode pages use your browser’s built-in audio player. Stationista podcast hosting and statistics

We load the Ghost search component from jsDelivr. Your browser sends connection information, such as your IP address and browser details, to that service when it loads the component. Our legal basis for providing the podcast and site search is our legitimate interest in making the site’s content accessible and easy to find under Article 6(1)(f) GDPR.

Sharing articles

The share buttons are links. Choosing Facebook opens Facebook with the article URL. Choosing X opens X with the article URL and title. Opening either link lets that service receive connection information such as your IP address and use its own cookies or account information. The service handles that information under its own privacy policy and may process it outside the European Economic Area. Facebook privacy policy · X privacy policy

Copying a link places the public article URL on your device’s clipboard. Sharing by email opens your email app with the URL. You choose the recipient and send the message from your own app.

Comments

If you post a comment, we process your member profile, the comment text and the time you posted it so we can publish and moderate the discussion. Your display name and comment are public. Some public comments were carried over from the previous WordPress site. Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in hosting and moderating discussion under Article 6(1)(f) GDPR. Contact us to request removal of a comment or ask about your data.
